  • #107: Marks of a Good Sermon [PODCAST]
  •

Welcome to The On Preaching Podcast, the podcast dedicated to helping you preach faithfully, clearly, and better.

There are some sermons you can listen to. There are some sermons you cannot listen to. And there are some sermons you must listen to. What’s the difference?

Every preacher should strive to preach compelling sermons. This has nothing to do with how people respond to the message. Ultimately, that is in the Lord’s hands. However, as much as it depends on us, we can strive to preach good sermons that demand a hearing and demand a verdict for Christ.

What are the marks of a good sermon?

    1. A Text-Driven Sermon
    2. A Well-Prepared Sermon
    3. A Christ-Centered Sermon
    4. A Venue Specific Sermon
    5. A Gospel-Driven Sermon
    6. A Clearly Communicated Sermon
    7. A Prayer-Saturated Sermon

What do you think are the marks of a good sermon?

Perhaps you heard about the pastor who preached what he thought was a great sermon and kept waiting for his wife to say something as they drove home. Well, she didn’t say anything. He decided she just needed to be encouraged. So he said, “You know, there aren’t many great preachers left in the world anymore.” And she replied, “Yes, and there’s one less than you think.” – Warren Wiersbe, Preaching in Black & White by E.K. Bailey and Warren Wiersbe, page. 73
