Happy Mother’s Day!

I am grateful to God for my wife, Crystal, the mother of my three children. We did not torture her as severely today, in honor of Mother’s Day.

We had quite a few guests in worship today. Grateful.

We did Charles Jenkins’ new song, “Awesome,” corporately. It is a beautiful song.

Our Children’s Choir sang today. It was great to have them participating on Mother’s Day.

Our Men’s Chorus led the special music. It is encouraging to have men lead out in praises to our God.

Praise God for the one who was baptized today.

I preached from Matthew 15:21-28. I entitled the message, “When a Mother Believes in Jesus.”

I sought to argue that Jesus responds to genuine faith.

I outlined the message simply:

  1. The request of the mother (vv. 21-22)
  2. The response of the Master (vv. 23-28)

I have been in pastoral ministry for over twenty years. But today was only the second time I have intentionally preached a message related to Mother’s Day. The last one was about 10 years ago.

I was forced in a corner to preach a Mother’s Day sermon because I preached a Father’s Day sermon last year. Really.

I did not address the politically correct but spiritually foolish decision on gay marriage our president announced this past week.

Praise God for those who were saved and added to the church today.

LeBron James won his third MVP award this weekend. It was said that he would not another MVP after he joined the Miami Heat. So much for bold predictions.

The Miami Heat took game 1 of their second round series against the Indiana Pacers.

The Los Angeles Clippers made it to the second round the NBA playoffs by defeating the Memphis Grizzlies in a game 7 on the road. Did I say the Los Angeles Clippers?

The Lakers also won their game 7 Saturday night against the Denver Nuggets. Who cares? (For the record, Crystal is being a fair-weather fan. Her lack of enthusiasm is acknowledgement that the Lakers will not get too far into these playoffs.)

There was supposed a rematch of Lamont Peterson’s controversial victory over Amir Khan Saturday night. But Peterson’s failed drugged test put an end to that. It is sad news for Peterson, and another black eye for the sport of boxing.

The Player’s Championship golf tournament took place this weekend here in Jacksonville. That’s all I know about it.

If you haven’t seen The Avengers yet, what are you waiting for? The Hulk steals the show!
