George E. Hurtt Interview

George E. Hurtt is the Senior-Pastor of the Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church of Los Angeles.

He is the fourth pastor of the congregation. My father, H.B. Charles, Sr. was the second pastor of the church. He served the congregation for over forty years. I was the third pastor of the church. I served the congregation for almost eighteen years.

During the later years of my tenure at Mt. Sinai, George served as my preaching assistant and pastoral assistant. He was the Executive Pastor of the church, even though we would have never thought to call it that.

After I called to the Shiloh Church in Jacksonville, Mt. Sinai selected George as its new pastor, where he has served for four years. The Lord is blessing their labors for the gospel.

I recently interviewed George, sort of. We actually just reminisced on our friendship and ministry experience together, along with George’s testimony of conversion, call to ministry, and early influences. It is a unique story that I hope you find encouraging.

I have been enjoying the interiew series, and I’m grateful, as a young preacher who strives for excellence in expository preaching- to see your commitment to that craft. In this climate of showmanship and synthetic, ‘sexy’ preaching (as Maurice Waston would say) it’s good to be able to reference these videos, and be reminded and refreshed in regards to its importance. I’m also thankful for your humble spirit. I was priveleged to meet you at the E.K. Bailey conference last year, and had a question about something you’d said in a class. And instead of blowing me off because you’re a big deal, you actually spent some time dialoguing with me about whatever the question I had was, and were so engaging. That left a mark, and caused me to purpose in my own heart to ALWAYS be that available going forward in my own ministry. God bless you sir. What you’re doing really, really matters.

When preachers really love and appreciate each other this is what they might say to each other: Some indeed preach Christ even from envy and strife, and some of goodwill: The former preach Christ from selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my chains; But the latter out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel. (Philippians 1:15-17 NKJ) We as preachers that love other preachers do so not so much because of who we are, but for whoms we are, and for the purpose behind why we preach. God bless you both.
