Ralph Douglas West Interview (Part 1)

I recently had the opportunity to interview one of my preaching, Dr. Ralph Douglas West, the founding and Senior-Pastor of the Church Without Walls in Houston, TX.

I have known Ralph West since I was a boy. And he has been a model preacher/pastor that I have followed over the course of my ministry.

I cherish his friendship, counsel, and encouragement.

It was my privilege to sit down with Pastor West for this one-one-one. I expected this interview to be about an hour. But Pastor West was so generous with his time, we talked for 2 1/2 hours!

This is a three-part interview, the portion below is part 1 of 3. The remaining parts will be posted throughout the week.

(A big shout-out to the SMBC Media Team for your partnership in the gospel. You make it happen!)

I have been following the ministry of Pastor West for more than a decade and anytime I am within a 200 mile radius of his preaching schedule I do my absolute best to be in the audience. My friend Adron Robinson is a mentee and student of Dr. West and he introduced me to Dr. West by way of one of his sermons “Michal Syndrome” 2 Samuel 6:13-23 and another of my favorites is “How to get rid of an Achan heart” Joshua 7:1! Ralph West is on my top 10 list of all-time favorite Biblical preachers! Another of my favorite sermons by Dr. West is “The Precedence and Priority of Jesus Christ” Colossians 1:15 This interview was tremendously helpful! I particularly appreciated the discussion on the Pastor having a Pastor. Someone mature in the Word, who can come along side of you and help you make sound biblical choices concerning life! Thanks so much Pastor Charles and Pastor West!

HB, its is always encouragement to listen to budding personalities that will share their life as god has shared his love. I live in Houston, and have listened to Ralph talk about his ministry through his preaching. It is refreshing to hear the depth of commitment as he willfully offers seeds of encouragement to the preaching pastor. There are many books he has mention through his preaching I have bought and read. There is one in particular which defines his dicipline in approach to the text itself, ” Toward An Exegetical Theoogy by Walter C. Kaiser, Jr. Even though we can graduate from seminary and read and write papers and sermons along with preaching them . It’s always beneficial to listen closely how one approaches the text and how he delivers what the Spirit allows him to see. The effiencies he is reaching in the place of dicipline have mentored me in my preaching ministry. Well done

HB: Thanks for continuing to share your gifts with us. The interview was very good. It illuminated the journey of Dr. West and lets us know that whether without a father, mother, mentor or friend. God’s grace is sufficient because He will provide where He guides us. Thank you friend. Can’t wait for parts 2 and 3 to hear when Dr. West was kicked out of 2 churches and what perhaps led to the church without walls. Blessings to you and your team. Wonderful work. This interview really bless my spirit especially concerning the importance of having a pastor who is mature enough whom you can listen and respect. Not a covering but a pastor who speak into your lif concerning decisions, family, health, ministry etc.

What an awesome interview! I can’t wait until parts 2 and 3. I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. West at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Fairfield, CA.(Dr. Claybon Lea Jr.) and he brought out something I did not know about Dr. Alvin Bernstein (Bethlehem Baptist, Richmond, CA).
